← Lecture 5.1 — Introduction to LogicA logical fallacy is an error in reasoning that renders an argument invalid, weak, or misleading. Fallacies are not simply false statements — they are flawed patterns of reasoning in which the conclusion does not follow logically from the premises, or in which the premises themselves are introduced in a deceptive or irrelevant way (Engel, 2020, p. 4).
Fallacies are extremely common in everyday life. They appear in political speeches, advertising campaigns, social media arguments, courtroom debates, and — unfortunately — in academic writing when students reason carelessly. Learning to identify fallacies is one of the most practically valuable skills a university student can develop, because it protects against manipulation and strengthens one's own arguments (Bassham et al., 2020, p. 140).
Consider this example before we begin:
Fallacies are classified into two broad categories. Understanding this classification clarifies where exactly the reasoning goes wrong in each case (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 114).
Definition: A formal fallacy is an error in the logical structure of a deductive argument. The flaw can be detected simply by examining the form of the argument — without knowing whether the premises are true or false.
Key feature: The conclusion does not follow from the premises because the argument violates the rules of deductive logic.
Example — Affirming the Consequent: If P then Q. Q is true. Therefore P is true. This structure is always invalid regardless of the content — wet ground does not prove it rained.

Definition: An informal fallacy is an error that arises from the content, context, or use of language in an argument — not from its formal structure alone. The premises may be structured correctly but are irrelevant, misleading, ambiguous, or insufficient to support the conclusion (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 115).
Key feature: To detect an informal fallacy, you must examine what is being said, not just how it is structured.
Divided into: Fallacies of relevance (premises irrelevant to conclusion), fallacies of weak induction (premises insufficient), and fallacies of presumption, ambiguity, and grammatical analogy.
Focus of this lecture: The 10 most important informal fallacies in academic and public discourse.
The Test for a Fallacy: When evaluating an argument for fallacies, ask: (1) Are the premises relevant to the conclusion, or do they introduce something irrelevant? (2) Are the premises sufficient to support the conclusion, or does the argument leap beyond what the evidence supports? (3) Are the premises acceptable — or do they assume what they are trying to prove? If any of these conditions fail, a fallacy may be present (Govier, 2020, p. 88).
The following ten fallacies are among the most commonly encountered in academic writing, political discourse, everyday conversation, and the media. Each is presented with a full definition, a clear Nigerian or academic example, a logical analysis of exactly why it fails, and guidance on how to avoid it in your own arguments (Engel, 2020, p. 20).
Definition: The ad hominem fallacy occurs when someone attacks or dismisses an argument by criticising the person making it rather than addressing the argument itself. Instead of engaging with the evidence or reasoning provided, the attacker redirects attention to the character, motives, personal history, or circumstances of the speaker. The Latin name means "against the person" (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 128).
Definition: The straw man fallacy occurs when someone misrepresents, distorts, or exaggerates an opponent's argument to make it easier to refute — and then attacks the distorted version rather than the actual argument. The name comes from the idea of constructing a "straw man" (a flimsy imitation) and then knocking it down instead of engaging with the real, stronger opponent (Engel, 2020, p. 54).
Definition: The false dichotomy fallacy (also called the false dilemma) occurs when an argument presents only two options as if they were the only possibilities, when in reality there are additional options that have been ignored or suppressed. It forces an artificial binary choice between two extremes, eliminating the middle ground (Copi et al., 2019, p. 178).
Definition: A hasty generalisation occurs when a broad general conclusion is drawn from a sample that is too small, too limited, or unrepresentative of the population being described. The arguer sees a few examples and incorrectly concludes that those examples represent the whole (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 152).
Definition: This fallacy occurs when an argument cites an authority figure as evidence for a claim, but that authority is not actually an expert in the relevant field, or when authority is invoked to settle a question that legitimate experts disagree about. Note that citing genuine experts is not a fallacy — the fallacy arises only when the authority cited is inappropriate, biased, or cited as if they settle a genuine debate (Engel, 2020, p. 68).
Definition: The slippery slope fallacy occurs when an argument asserts that one event will inevitably lead to a chain of increasingly extreme and undesirable consequences, without providing adequate evidence for each step in that chain. It assumes, without justification, that a moderate first step will necessarily lead to catastrophic final outcomes (Walton, 2020, p. 58).
Definition: Circular reasoning, or begging the question, occurs when the conclusion of an argument is used as one of its premises — either explicitly or in a disguised form. The argument goes in a circle: it assumes as true the very thing it is trying to prove, providing no real evidence or reasoning beyond restating the conclusion (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 160).
Definition: The red herring fallacy occurs when an argument introduces an irrelevant topic or piece of information to distract the audience from the actual issue being discussed. Rather than engaging with the real argument, the speaker or writer redirects attention to something tangentially related but logically irrelevant — deliberately or accidentally steering the discussion off course (Engel, 2020, p. 86).
Definition: The post hoc fallacy occurs when someone concludes that because Event B followed Event A in time, Event A must have caused Event B. It confuses correlation (two things happening together or in sequence) with causation (one thing actually causing the other). The full Latin phrase is Post hoc ergo propter hoc — "after this, therefore because of this" (Copi et al., 2019, p. 186).
Definition: The bandwagon fallacy (formally called ad populum, meaning "appeal to the people") occurs when an argument claims that something must be true, good, or right simply because many people believe it or do it. The popularity of a belief is offered as if it were evidence for its truth or value (Hurley & Watson, 2018, p. 168).
Apply your knowledge of all ten fallacies to the following exercises. For each item, identify the fallacy present, explain why it is a fallacy, and rewrite the argument to make it logically sound (Bassham et al., 2020, p. 185).
For each argument: (a) identify the fallacy by name, (b) explain precisely why it is a fallacy, and (c) where possible, rewrite the argument to remove the fallacy.
Fallacies are not rare curiosities found only in philosophy textbooks — they are the daily currency of political speech, advertising, social media, and unfortunately, weak academic writing. The student who can identify an ad hominem, recognise a straw man, and resist a bandwagon argument is equipped with one of the most practically powerful intellectual skills available (Engel, 2020, p. 110).
The core principle unifying all ten fallacies is the same: the conclusion does not follow from the evidence, or the evidence is irrelevant, insufficient, or dishonestly framed. Avoiding fallacies in academic writing means ensuring that every premise you offer is directly relevant to your conclusion, that your evidence is sufficient to support the claims you make, and that you engage with opposing views honestly rather than distorting them. Lecture 5.3 extends this to the broader discipline of critical thinking — the capacity to evaluate all claims, including your own, with rigour and intellectual honesty (Bassham et al., 2020, p. 190).
