It goes beyond simply accepting what is presented and instead asks: Is this claim true? Is the evidence sufficient? Have I considered alternative explanations? What assumptions are being made? (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 4).
Ordinary thinking is passive — it accepts information as it is presented, relies on habit and intuition, and is easily influenced by emotion, authority, and social pressure. Critical thinking is active, self-monitoring, and disciplined — it constantly examines and corrects itself (Facione, 2020, p. 10).
The difference can be illustrated clearly. When a student reads a news headline that says "University students are lazy and underprepared for the job market," an ordinary thinker might either accept or reject this claim based on whether it matches their gut feeling. A critical thinker asks: Who published this claim? What evidence supports it? What was the sample? Who defines "lazy"? What comparison is being made? What interests does the publisher have? Only after answering these questions would a critical thinker form a view — and even then, they would hold it with appropriate tentativeness.
Critical Thinking and Academic Success: Research consistently shows that students with strong critical thinking skills write better essays, achieve higher grades, perform better in careers, and make more informed life decisions. Critical thinking is not a bonus skill — it is the foundational skill that makes all other academic abilities more powerful (Halpern, 2019, p. 5).
Richard Paul and Linda Elder, two of the world's leading theorists of critical thinking, identified eight universal elements that are present in all reasoning. These elements provide a comprehensive framework for analysing any argument, text, or piece of reasoning — including your own academic essays (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 60).
Understanding these elements means you can take any essay, any speech, or any piece of writing and ask eight powerful analytical questions of it. More importantly, you can use these elements to construct better arguments in your own writing by ensuring that each element is addressed consciously and clearly.
Suppose you read an article arguing that Nigerian universities should switch entirely to online examinations. Applying Paul and Elder's framework, a critical thinker would ask:
Purpose: Is the author trying to improve educational efficiency, or do they have a commercial interest in online examination platforms? Question: Is the question "Should Nigerian universities use online examinations?" the right question, or should it be "Under what conditions are online examinations appropriate?"? Information: What evidence is offered? Are the studies cited from Nigerian contexts or transplanted from different educational systems? Assumptions: The argument may assume all students have reliable internet access — is this true for rural Nigerian students? Implications: If all examinations go online, what happens to students in areas with unstable power supply? Each of these questions deepens the analysis and prevents uncritical acceptance (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 68).
Critical thinking requires not just finding evidence but evaluating it. Three criteria are essential for assessing whether any piece of evidence genuinely supports a claim in academic writing (Govier, 2020, p. 72). These criteria apply whether you are evaluating someone else's argument or constructing your own.

The Evidence Evaluation Rule: Before including any evidence in an academic essay, ask yourself three questions in order: (1) Is this source credible enough to be cited in academic work? (2) Does this evidence directly address my specific claim? (3) Is this evidence sufficient to support the strength of the conclusion I am drawing? If any answer is "no" or "uncertain," either find better evidence or weaken your conclusion to match what the evidence can actually support (Govier, 2020, p. 80).
One of the most fundamental skills in critical thinking is the ability to distinguish between facts, opinions, and inferences. Many arguments fail or become confused because writers — and readers — treat opinions as facts, or treat inferences as established facts. The confusion between these three categories is a source of enormous analytical error (Ruggiero, 2019, p. 55).

Academic writing requires rigorous honesty about what kind of statement you are making. Consider these common errors:
Treating opinion as fact: Writing "It is clear that Nigerian students are not adequately prepared for university-level work" presents a contested judgement as if it were an objective fact. The correct academic form is: "There is evidence to suggest that some Nigerian students may face challenges in transitioning to university-level academic expectations (National Board for Technical Education, 2022)." The hedging is not weakness — it is intellectual honesty (Moore & Parker, 2021, p. 38).
Treating inference as fact: If graduation rates improved after a new curriculum was introduced, it is an inference that the new curriculum caused the improvement — not a fact. Other factors (improved funding, better lecturers, economic conditions) may be responsible. Claiming the curriculum "caused" the improvement without isolating its specific contribution overstates what the evidence establishes.
Academic Language Rule: Use "it is a fact that..." only for things that are genuinely verifiable. Use "in my view," "I argue that," or "this suggests" for opinions and inferences. Use hedging language ("may," "might," "could," "appears to," "suggests") when drawing inferences from evidence. Precision in this language is a marker of academic maturity and intellectual integrity (Ruggiero, 2019, p. 60).
Bloom's Taxonomy, revised by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001), provides a hierarchical classification of the cognitive skills required in education. It describes six levels of thinking, from the most basic (remembering) to the most sophisticated (creating). Critical thinking operates primarily at the higher levels of this taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2019, p. 67).
Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy helps you recognise what level of thinking an examination question or essay prompt is asking for — and ensures that you operate at the appropriate level. Many students fail to achieve high marks not because they lack knowledge, but because they reason at too low a level (describing when they should be analysing, or listing when they should be evaluating).
Exam Strategy: Read every examination question carefully and identify which level of Bloom's Taxonomy it requires. The verb is the signal: "List" = Remembering. "Explain" = Understanding. "Identify" = Applying. "Analyse" = Analysing. "Evaluate" = Evaluating. "Argue" or "Discuss" = Creating and Evaluating. Answering at the right level is as important as having the right content (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2019, p. 75).
Critical thinking is not merely an abstract intellectual exercise — it must translate directly into the way you read and write academically. A critically thinking writer reads sources with sceptical attention, constructs arguments with logical care, and presents conclusions with appropriate intellectual humility (Ennis, 2018, p. 42).
Even students who understand logic and fallacies in theory often make these specific errors when writing under examination pressure or essay deadlines. Knowing them in advance allows you to avoid them deliberately:
