Section I

What Is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is the disciplined, self-directed process of actively analysing, synthesising, evaluating, and applying information to reach well-reasoned conclusions. It goes beyond simply accepting what is presented and instead asks: Is this claim true? Is the evidence sufficient? Have I considered alternative explanations? What assumptions are being made? (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 4).

Ordinary thinking is passive — it accepts information as it is presented, relies on habit and intuition, and is easily influenced by emotion, authority, and social pressure. Critical thinking is active, self-monitoring, and disciplined — it constantly examines and corrects itself (Facione, 2020, p. 10).

The difference can be illustrated clearly. When a student reads a news headline that says "University students are lazy and underprepared for the job market," an ordinary thinker might either accept or reject this claim based on whether it matches their gut feeling. A critical thinker asks: Who published this claim? What evidence supports it? What was the sample? Who defines "lazy"? What comparison is being made? What interests does the publisher have? Only after answering these questions would a critical thinker form a view — and even then, they would hold it with appropriate tentativeness.

Critical Thinking — Core Characteristics
Rationality
Critical thinking is guided by reasons and evidence, not by emotion, habit, or social pressure. This does not mean emotions are irrelevant — emotional intelligence is part of being fully human — but it means that evidence, not feeling, determines the conclusion (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 8).
Self-Awareness
Critical thinkers are aware of their own biases, assumptions, and limitations. They recognise that their own thinking can be flawed by cultural conditioning, personal experience, wishful thinking, and cognitive shortcuts — and they take steps to compensate for these influences (Brookfield, 2019, p. 12).
Open-Mindedness
Critical thinkers are willing to consider evidence that contradicts their existing views, to change their minds when the evidence warrants it, and to entertain perspectives very different from their own. This does not mean agreeing with everything — it means being genuinely open to being persuaded by good reasons (Facione, 2020, p. 15).
Intellectual Discipline
Critical thinking is effortful. It requires slowing down, asking hard questions, examining assumptions, checking sources, and revising conclusions. It is the opposite of the mental shortcuts our minds naturally prefer. This is why it must be deliberately cultivated, especially in academic settings (Halpern, 2019, p. 22).

Critical Thinking and Academic Success: Research consistently shows that students with strong critical thinking skills write better essays, achieve higher grades, perform better in careers, and make more informed life decisions. Critical thinking is not a bonus skill — it is the foundational skill that makes all other academic abilities more powerful (Halpern, 2019, p. 5).

Section II

The Eight Elements of Reasoning (Paul and Elder)

Richard Paul and Linda Elder, two of the world's leading theorists of critical thinking, identified eight universal elements that are present in all reasoning. These elements provide a comprehensive framework for analysing any argument, text, or piece of reasoning — including your own academic essays (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 60).

Understanding these elements means you can take any essay, any speech, or any piece of writing and ask eight powerful analytical questions of it. More importantly, you can use these elements to construct better arguments in your own writing by ensuring that each element is addressed consciously and clearly.

1. Purpose
Every piece of reasoning has a purpose or goal. Ask: What is the thinker trying to achieve? What problem are they trying to solve or question are they trying to answer? In academic writing: What is your essay trying to establish?
2. Question at Issue
All reasoning is a response to a question or problem. Ask: What is the central question being addressed? Is it clearly stated? Is it the right question? In academic writing: Is your research question focused and answerable?
3. Information
Reasoning uses evidence, data, facts, and experience as raw material. Ask: What data is being used? Is it accurate? Is it sufficient? Does it actually support the conclusion? In academic writing: Is your evidence current, credible, and relevant?
4. Concepts
Reasoning uses concepts, theories, definitions, and principles to interpret information. Ask: What key terms are being used? Are they defined clearly and consistently? Are the right conceptual frameworks being applied?
5. Assumptions
All reasoning takes something for granted — things accepted without proof. Ask: What is being assumed? Are these assumptions justified? Are they stated or hidden? In academic writing: examine your own unstated assumptions.
6. Inferences
Reasoning draws conclusions and interpretations from information. Ask: What is the reasoning step from the evidence to the conclusion? Is this inference justified by the evidence, or does it leap beyond what the evidence supports?
7. Point of View
All reasoning is conducted from a perspective or point of view. Ask: What perspective shapes this argument? What is left out from this viewpoint? What would the argument look like from a different perspective?
8. Implications
All reasoning has consequences and implications. Ask: If this argument is correct, what follows? What are the practical, ethical, or theoretical consequences of accepting this conclusion? Have these been considered?

Applying the Eight Elements to Academic Reading — Worked Example

Suppose you read an article arguing that Nigerian universities should switch entirely to online examinations. Applying Paul and Elder's framework, a critical thinker would ask:

Purpose: Is the author trying to improve educational efficiency, or do they have a commercial interest in online examination platforms? Question: Is the question "Should Nigerian universities use online examinations?" the right question, or should it be "Under what conditions are online examinations appropriate?"? Information: What evidence is offered? Are the studies cited from Nigerian contexts or transplanted from different educational systems? Assumptions: The argument may assume all students have reliable internet access — is this true for rural Nigerian students? Implications: If all examinations go online, what happens to students in areas with unstable power supply? Each of these questions deepens the analysis and prevents uncritical acceptance (Paul & Elder, 2020, p. 68).

Section III

The Three Criteria for Evaluating Evidence

Critical thinking requires not just finding evidence but evaluating it. Three criteria are essential for assessing whether any piece of evidence genuinely supports a claim in academic writing (Govier, 2020, p. 72). These criteria apply whether you are evaluating someone else's argument or constructing your own.

Arguing that Nigerian students need better mental health support and citing evidence about student debt in the United States — a different context, different problem, different population.
3. Sufficiency Is there enough evidence to justify the claim? Does the weight and quantity of evidence match the strength of the conclusion? Strong conclusions require strong and extensive evidence. Tentative claims require less. Never draw a universal conclusion from one study, one anecdote, or one statistic. Concluding that "corporal punishment causes long-term psychological harm to all children" based on a single case study of five children. One study cannot establish a universal principle.

The Evidence Evaluation Rule: Before including any evidence in an academic essay, ask yourself three questions in order: (1) Is this source credible enough to be cited in academic work? (2) Does this evidence directly address my specific claim? (3) Is this evidence sufficient to support the strength of the conclusion I am drawing? If any answer is "no" or "uncertain," either find better evidence or weaken your conclusion to match what the evidence can actually support (Govier, 2020, p. 80).

Section IV

Fact, Opinion, and Inference

One of the most fundamental skills in critical thinking is the ability to distinguish between facts, opinions, and inferences. Many arguments fail or become confused because writers — and readers — treat opinions as facts, or treat inferences as established facts. The confusion between these three categories is a source of enormous analytical error (Ruggiero, 2019, p. 55).

FACT OPINION INFERENCE
Definition: A statement that can be verified as true or false by observation, measurement, or scientific investigation. Facts are independent of what anyone thinks or feels about them. Definition: A statement that expresses a personal belief, evaluation, preference, or judgement. Opinions may be informed or uninformed, but they cannot be verified as objectively true or false in the same way facts can. Definition: A conclusion drawn from facts or observations, but which goes beyond what is directly observed. Inferences interpret evidence and draw conclusions — they are reasonable but not certain, and they can be wrong.
Key test: Can it be checked by direct evidence independent of personal perspective? Key test: Does it reflect a personal evaluation, preference, or value judgement? Key test: Is it a reasonable conclusion drawn from observable evidence, but not directly observable itself?
Example: "Nigeria has 36 states and a Federal Capital Territory."

Example: "The University of Uyo was established in 1983."

Example: "Global surface temperatures have increased by approximately 1.1°C since the pre-industrial period."
Example: "Nigerian universities offer the best education in West Africa."

Example: "Mathematics is more important than English in the modern economy."

Example: "The current JAMB cut-off score is too low."
Example: The library is empty on a Monday morning. Inference: Students do not use the library at the start of the week. (Reasonable, but the students might be in a seminar, online, or elsewhere — not certain.)

Example: Test scores dropped after the new policy was introduced. Inference: The policy caused scores to drop. (Possible, but other factors may be responsible.)

Why This Distinction Matters in Academic Writing

Academic writing requires rigorous honesty about what kind of statement you are making. Consider these common errors:

Treating opinion as fact: Writing "It is clear that Nigerian students are not adequately prepared for university-level work" presents a contested judgement as if it were an objective fact. The correct academic form is: "There is evidence to suggest that some Nigerian students may face challenges in transitioning to university-level academic expectations (National Board for Technical Education, 2022)." The hedging is not weakness — it is intellectual honesty (Moore & Parker, 2021, p. 38).

Treating inference as fact: If graduation rates improved after a new curriculum was introduced, it is an inference that the new curriculum caused the improvement — not a fact. Other factors (improved funding, better lecturers, economic conditions) may be responsible. Claiming the curriculum "caused" the improvement without isolating its specific contribution overstates what the evidence establishes.

Academic Language Rule: Use "it is a fact that..." only for things that are genuinely verifiable. Use "in my view," "I argue that," or "this suggests" for opinions and inferences. Use hedging language ("may," "might," "could," "appears to," "suggests") when drawing inferences from evidence. Precision in this language is a marker of academic maturity and intellectual integrity (Ruggiero, 2019, p. 60).

Section V

Bloom's Taxonomy and Academic Reasoning

Bloom's Taxonomy, revised by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001), provides a hierarchical classification of the cognitive skills required in education. It describes six levels of thinking, from the most basic (remembering) to the most sophisticated (creating). Critical thinking operates primarily at the higher levels of this taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2019, p. 67).

Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy helps you recognise what level of thinking an examination question or essay prompt is asking for — and ensures that you operate at the appropriate level. Many students fail to achieve high marks not because they lack knowledge, but because they reason at too low a level (describing when they should be analysing, or listing when they should be evaluating).

Remembering — The Foundational Level
Recall and recognise facts, definitions, and basic information. Key verbs: list, define, recall, identify, state. Example: "List the four components of an argument." This is the most basic level — necessary but insufficient for academic success on its own.

Understanding — Comprehension
Demonstrate understanding by explaining in your own words, summarising, paraphrasing, or classifying. Key verbs: explain, describe, summarise, interpret, classify. Example: "Explain the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning." This goes beyond recitation to showing genuine comprehension.
3
Applying — Using Knowledge
Use knowledge or concepts in new contexts, solve problems, or apply principles to specific situations. Key verbs: apply, use, demonstrate, illustrate, solve. Example: "Identify the fallacy in the following argument." This level requires transferring knowledge to a new situation.
4
Analysing — Breaking Down
Break material into components, identify relationships, distinguish relevant from irrelevant parts, examine how parts relate to the whole. Key verbs: analyse, distinguish, examine, compare, contrast, deconstruct. Example: "Analyse the logical structure of this argument and identify its strengths and weaknesses." This is the level most examination essays require.

Evaluating — Making Judgements
Make judgements based on criteria, assess the quality or value of material, justify decisions with evidence and reasoning. Key verbs: evaluate, assess, judge, critique, justify, defend. Example: "Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of inductive reasoning in social science research." This level requires taking a position and defending it with evidence.

Creating — The Highest Level
Produce something new by combining elements in an original way — generate a hypothesis, design a study, construct an argument, or write an original essay that synthesises multiple sources into a new thesis. Key verbs: create, design, construct, formulate, compose. Example: "Write an essay arguing for or against the proposition that critical thinking can be taught." This is the level of genuine intellectual independence.

Exam Strategy: Read every examination question carefully and identify which level of Bloom's Taxonomy it requires. The verb is the signal: "List" = Remembering. "Explain" = Understanding. "Identify" = Applying. "Analyse" = Analysing. "Evaluate" = Evaluating. "Argue" or "Discuss" = Creating and Evaluating. Answering at the right level is as important as having the right content (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2019, p. 75).

Section VI

Applying Critical Thinking in Academic Writing

Critical thinking is not merely an abstract intellectual exercise — it must translate directly into the way you read and write academically. A critically thinking writer reads sources with sceptical attention, constructs arguments with logical care, and presents conclusions with appropriate intellectual humility (Ennis, 2018, p. 42).

Six Common Reasoning Errors in Academic Essays

Even students who understand logic and fallacies in theory often make these specific errors when writing under examination pressure or essay deadlines. Knowing them in advance allows you to avoid them deliberately:

1. The Unsupported Assertion
Making a claim without providing any evidence or reasoning to support it. Example: Writing "Social media has damaged communication skills in Nigerian youth" as if it were self-evident, without citing any research, data, or reasoning. Every significant claim must be followed by evidence or a logical argument for why it is true (Moore & Parker, 2021, p. 44).
2. The Leap in Reasoning
Drawing a conclusion that goes significantly beyond what the evidence supports. Example: Citing one study showing that students who attended private secondary schools scored higher in university entrance examinations, then concluding "Private education is superior to public education in all respects." The evidence speaks only to one measure — entrance examination scores — in one study. It cannot support a universal conclusion about all aspects of education.
3. Ignoring Counter-Evidence
Presenting only the evidence that supports your position while ignoring evidence that contradicts it. This is intellectually dishonest and logically irresponsible. Academic writing requires you to engage with the strongest counter-arguments, acknowledge what they establish, and explain why your position is still the most defensible despite them (Ennis, 2018, p. 50).
4. Confusing Correlation with Causation
Concluding that because two things are correlated, one caused the other (this is the post hoc fallacy in action, studied in Lecture 5.2). Example: "States with more universities have higher rates of entrepreneurship. Therefore, universities cause entrepreneurship." Both may be caused by a third factor — higher investment in education by wealthier states — rather than one causing the other.
5. The Misuse of Quotations
Using a quotation from an author to support a claim, when the author actually meant something different in context, or when the quotation is taken from a work about a different topic or time period. Always read the full context of any quotation you use, and ensure it genuinely supports your specific claim rather than merely sounding related to it (Brookfield, 2019, p. 35).
6. Circular Conclusion
Ending an essay by simply restating the thesis in slightly different words, rather than showing how the body of evidence and reasoning has established the thesis. A strong conclusion demonstrates that the argument has been made, synthesises the key evidence, and may extend to broader implications. It does not merely announce the thesis again.
