Section IWhat Is Digital Literacy?
Digital literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information using digital technologies, in ways that are safe, ethical, effective, and appropriate to different social and academic contexts (Bawden, 2021, p. 18). It goes far beyond simply being able to use a smartphone or browse the internet. A digitally literate person understands how digital systems work, why information behaves the way it does online, and how to navigate the digital world with intelligence, responsibility, and critical awareness.
In Nigeria, digital literacy has become urgent and unavoidable. With over 122 million active internet users as of 2024, Nigeria has one of the largest digital populations in Africa (Statista, 2024). Nigerians are among the most active users of social media platforms worldwide — WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok are deeply woven into daily communication, commerce, politics, and education. Yet digital access has not automatically produced digital competence. Misinformation spreads rapidly through messaging apps. Cybercrime targets individuals who lack digital safety knowledge. University students submit plagiarised content downloaded from unreliable online sources. These challenges make digital literacy a critical academic and civic competency (Ojo & Dike, 2022, p. 7).
It is important to distinguish digital literacy from related concepts:
Digital Literacy vs. Related Concepts
- Digital Literacy
- The ability to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information using digital technology safely, effectively, and ethically. Covers skills across multiple domains: information, communication, content creation, safety, problem-solving, and critical evaluation (Bawden, 2021, p. 20).
- Digital Access
- Simply having the hardware and internet connection to go online. Many Nigerians have digital access without being digitally literate — they can open WhatsApp but cannot evaluate whether the information they receive is credible. Access is the prerequisite; literacy is the skill (Ojo & Dike, 2022, p. 9).
- Computer Literacy
- The older, narrower concept of being able to operate a computer — using a keyboard, navigating a file system, running software. Digital literacy is broader: it includes computer skills but extends to information evaluation, online communication, digital identity, and safety in networked environments.
- Information Literacy
- The ability to identify an information need, locate relevant sources, evaluate their credibility, and use the information ethically. Information literacy is a subset of digital literacy — one of its six core pillars, which we examine in Section II.

Why Digital Literacy Matters for University Students: Every assessment you complete draws on digital tools — online research databases, word processors, referencing software, e-learning platforms, and digital submission systems. Every communication you send — emails to lecturers, group chats with classmates, presentations — is a digital act. Your ability to navigate this environment with competence and integrity directly affects your academic success (Bawden, 2021, p. 25).
Section IIThe Six Pillars of Digital Literacy
Digital literacy is not a single skill but a complex of related competencies. Researchers and educators have identified six core pillars that together constitute full digital literacy. Mastery in all six is the goal of a digitally literate university student (Jisc, 2019; Hobbs, 2020, p. 14).
1. Information Literacy
The ability to find, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically. This includes searching academic databases, distinguishing credible from unreliable sources, understanding how search engine algorithms work, and citing sources correctly.
Nigerian example: Knowing to search Google Scholar or the university library portal for research, rather than relying on the first result that appears on a general Google search.
2. Communication and Collaboration
The ability to communicate effectively using digital channels — email, video conferencing, collaborative documents, and academic platforms. Includes understanding audience, tone, and format in different digital contexts, and working productively with others online.
Example: Writing a formal email to a lecturer versus a casual WhatsApp message to a classmate — the same information communicated in completely different registers appropriate to each platform.
3. Digital Content Creation
The ability to create digital content — documents, presentations, videos, websites, and social media posts — to a standard appropriate for academic, professional, and civic contexts. Includes understanding copyright, licensing, and intellectual property as they apply to digital content.
Example: Creating a well-structured PowerPoint presentation for a seminar that uses original images or properly licensed visuals, rather than copying images without attribution.
4. Digital Safety and Wellbeing
The ability to protect your personal information, recognise online threats (phishing, scams, malware), manage your digital reputation, and maintain psychological wellbeing in online environments. Includes understanding privacy settings, strong password practices, and the long-term visibility of digital footprints (Hobbs, 2020, p. 22).
Nigerian example: Recognising when a WhatsApp message asking you to "verify your BVN by clicking this link" is a phishing attempt rather than a legitimate bank communication.
5. Problem-Solving and Technical Skills
The ability to use digital tools effectively to solve real problems, troubleshoot technical issues, and adapt to new technologies. This includes navigating unfamiliar software, understanding basic file management, and using productivity tools for academic work.
Example: Being able to use the university's e-learning management system (LMS) to submit assignments, access lecture notes, participate in online quizzes, and contact lecturers — even when the interface is unfamiliar.
6. Critical Thinking in Digital Contexts
The ability to apply critical thinking skills (from Module 5) specifically to digital content — evaluating the credibility of online sources, recognising bias and agenda in digital media, understanding how algorithms shape what we see, and resisting manipulation by misinformation.
Example: Understanding that the YouTube videos recommended to you are shaped by an algorithm designed to maximise your watch time, not to give you balanced, accurate information on a topic.

Self-Assessment: Rate yourself honestly from 1–5 on each of the six pillars. Where are your strongest skills? Where are your gaps? Digital literacy development should be deliberate — identify your weakest pillar and focus effort there. For most Nigerian university students, the areas most needing development are information literacy (evaluating online sources) and digital safety (Ojo & Dike, 2022, p. 14).
Section IIIDigital Communication in Nigeria
Nigeria's digital communication landscape is one of the most dynamic and complex in Africa. With the highest number of internet users on the continent, Nigeria is simultaneously a leader in digital innovation — in fintech, e-commerce, and the creative industries — and a major site of digital misinformation, online fraud, and the misuse of communication technology (Nwosu & Obi, 2021, p. 33).
Understanding the specific contours of digital communication in Nigeria is essential for university students, who are among the heaviest users of digital platforms and who will enter careers in which digital communication competence is expected across all sectors.

Section IVMisinformation, Disinformation, and Fake News
One of the most serious challenges of digital communication is the proliferation of false and misleading information. Nigeria has experienced devastating consequences of digital misinformation: false medical information during the COVID-19 pandemic, ethnic violence triggered by fabricated stories, and financial scams that have cost citizens billions of naira. Understanding the precise categories of false information is the first step toward resisting it (Ireton & Posetti, 2020, p. 42).
✖ Misinformation False but Not Deliberate
Definition: False or inaccurate information shared without the intent to deceive. The person sharing it genuinely believes it to be true. Misinformation spreads through ignorance, carelessness, or misunderstanding — not deliberate malice (Wardle & Derakhshan, 2021, p. 6).
Nigerian Example: A WhatsApp message claiming that drinking hot water with lemon juice cures malaria is forwarded thousands of times by people who genuinely believe it and want to help their contacts. The original sender may not have intended to deceive anyone — but the information is medically false and potentially dangerous, as it may discourage people from seeking proper treatment.
Why it spreads: People forward misinformation because it confirms their existing beliefs (confirmation bias), because it triggers emotional responses (fear, hope, outrage), or because they trust the person who sent it to them without verifying the information independently.
✖ Disinformation Deliberately False
Definition: False information deliberately created and spread to deceive, manipulate, or cause harm. Disinformation involves intent — the creator knows the information is false and spreads it anyway for political, financial, or social purposes (Ireton & Posetti, 2020, p. 45).
Nigerian Example: During an election period, a political campaign creates and distributes a fabricated video showing an opponent making a statement they never actually made, designed to damage their electoral chances. The creators know the video is a fabrication. This is disinformation: a deliberate, coordinated deception campaign.
Financial Example: A fraudulent investment scheme creates a fake website, fake testimonials, and fake news articles claiming that a famous Nigerian entrepreneur endorses their product. All of this is deliberately created to defraud investors. This is financial disinformation — deliberate deception for economic gain.
Why it is dangerous: Disinformation is often sophisticated and well-funded. It exploits the same psychological vulnerabilities as misinformation but adds the element of strategic design. In a high-information-volume environment, it can be nearly impossible to distinguish from genuine content without deliberate fact-checking.
✖ Malinformation True but Used to Harm
Definition: Genuine information used out of context or shared with the deliberate intent to harm an individual, organisation, or group. The information itself may be true, but its weaponised use is the problem (Wardle & Derakhshan, 2021, p. 8).
Example: Private photographs or messages belonging to a person are leaked online without their consent to damage their reputation or expose them to harassment. The information (the photographs) is real, but its use is harmful, unethical, and in many cases criminal under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act 2015.
Note: Malinformation is why privacy protection (Pillar 4 — Digital Safety) is so important. Anything you share digitally can potentially be taken out of context and weaponised.
✖ Fake News A Special Category
Definition: The term "fake news" refers specifically to fabricated news stories presented in the format of legitimate journalism — with the visual appearance of newspaper articles or broadcast reports — that are entirely or substantially false. It is a form of disinformation dressed in journalistic clothing (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2020, p. 214).
Example: A website designed to look like a reputable Nigerian news outlet publishes a story claiming that the Central Bank of Nigeria has announced a 50% devaluation of the naira with immediate effect. The story is entirely fabricated but spreads through social media before it is debunked, causing panic in financial markets and among ordinary citizens.
Important note: The term "fake news" is also misused by politicians and public figures to dismiss any journalism they dislike — even when the journalism is accurate and well-evidenced. Be sceptical when powerful people use this phrase — check whether the journalism has been specifically and substantively refuted, or whether the label is being used to avoid accountability.
Section VFact-Checking Strategies
Fact-checking is the practice of verifying the accuracy of information before accepting or sharing it. In the age of social media, where information moves faster than the ability to verify it, fact-checking has become one of the most essential digital literacy skills (Posetti & Matthews, 2018, p. 12). The following strategies form a practical toolkit for any digitally literate person.
Strategy 1 — Lateral Reading
Rather than reading deeply into a single website to assess its credibility, lateral reading involves opening multiple new tabs and checking what other sources say about the original source. This is how professional fact-checkers work.
- When you encounter an unfamiliar website, search for the name of the site or organisation in a new tab
- Ask: what do independent, credible sources say about this outlet?
- Check Wikipedia, media review sites, and established news organisations for assessments of the source
- Do not trust a source’s description of itself — find out what others say about it
Strategy 2 — Reverse Image Search
Images are frequently taken out of context to support false claims. A photograph from a flood in Mozambique in 2019 may be shared as "evidence" of flooding in Lagos in 2024. Reverse image search lets you find the original source of any image.
- Right-click any image and select "Search image with Google" (or use tools.google.com/reverse-image-search)
- Check when the image first appeared online and in what context
- If the image was being used before the event it allegedly depicts, it is being used dishonestly
- TinEye is an alternative reverse image search tool
Strategy 3 — Check the Date
Old stories and photographs are regularly re-shared as if they are current news. A report of violence from three years ago may be shared with the caption "happening right now." Always check the original publication date of any content before accepting its claimed context.
- Look for the publication or upload date on the article or video
- Search for the story using date filters to confirm when it actually occurred
- Be especially sceptical of dramatic content shared without a clear date
- Ask: is this being shared at a time when there is political or social tension that would make this content emotionally useful for someone’s agenda?
Strategy 4 — Use Nigerian Fact-Checking Organisations
Several credible organisations in Nigeria and Africa provide professional fact-checking services. Before sharing or believing a claim, check these resources:
- Dubawa (dubawa.org) — Nigeria’s leading fact-checking initiative
- Africa Check (africacheck.org) — Pan-African fact-checking organisation
- FactCheckHub (factcheckhub.com) — Nigeria-focused fact-checking
- Snopes (snopes.com) — International; strong for viral social media claims
- Search the claim on any of these sites before sharing
Strategy 5 — SIFT Method
The SIFT method (developed by Mike Caulfield) provides a four-step framework for quickly evaluating online information (Caulfield, 2019):
- Stop: Before reacting or sharing, pause. Ask yourself: do I know this source? Am I reacting emotionally?
- Investigate the source: Who is behind this content? What are their credentials and motivations?
- Find better coverage: Is this story reported by multiple credible independent sources?
- Trace claims: Where did the original claim, image, or statistic come from? Follow it back to its source.
Strategy 6 — Evaluate Emotional Triggers
Misinformation and disinformation are designed to trigger strong emotional responses — outrage, fear, pride, disgust — because emotional arousal impairs careful thinking and dramatically increases sharing behaviour.
- If content makes you feel intensely emotional (shocked, furious, scared), treat this as a signal to slow down, not a reason to immediately share
- Ask: who benefits from me feeling this way and sharing this?
- Check the claim with a fact-checking tool before acting on the emotion
- Recall from Module 5: emotional persuasion without evidence is often a fallacy — an appeal to fear or an appeal to the bandwagon
Section VIDigital Safety and Online Ethics
Digital safety is the practice of protecting yourself, your information, and others from harm in online environments. For Nigerian university students, the most relevant threats include account hacking, phishing scams, social engineering fraud, and the misuse of personal data. Online ethics refers to the standards of appropriate and responsible behaviour in digital spaces (Nwosu & Obi, 2021, p. 55).
Digital Safety — Core Practices
- Strong Password Management
- Use passwords of at least 12 characters combining letters, numbers, and symbols. Never use the same password for multiple accounts. Never use your name, date of birth, or the word "password." Use a trusted password manager application to store complex passwords securely. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all important accounts — your university email, banking apps, and social media (Hobbs, 2020, p. 45).
- Recognising Phishing Attempts
- Phishing is an attempt to steal your personal information (passwords, BVN, banking details) by pretending to be a legitimate organisation. Common signs: unexpected urgency ("Your account will be closed in 24 hours"), requests for sensitive information via email or WhatsApp, links that look almost but not exactly like a real site (e.g., "nigerianbannk.com" instead of "nigerianbank.com"), poor grammar and spelling. In Nigeria, common phishing targets include bank account holders, JAMB applicants, and those seeking employment. Never click suspicious links and never provide personal information in response to unsolicited digital communication.
- Privacy Settings and Digital Footprints
- Everything you post, comment on, like, or share online contributes to your permanent digital footprint. Future employers, university admissions offices, and professional bodies increasingly search candidates’ social media histories. Review and set your privacy settings on all platforms. Be deliberate about what you post publicly. Remember: even "deleted" content may have been screenshot, archived, or cached by search engines before deletion (Nwosu & Obi, 2021, p. 60).
- Online Ethics and Academic Integrity
- Digital environments raise specific ethical challenges for university students: plagiarism facilitated by easy copy-paste from online sources, the submission of AI-generated work as one’s own, the sharing of examination questions or answers via WhatsApp groups, and cyberbullying of classmates or lecturers. All of these violate academic integrity standards and may carry serious academic and legal consequences under Nigerian law (Cybercrimes Act 2015) and university regulations.
Section VIIDigital Tools for Academic Work
Digitally literate students use a range of tools to support their academic work efficiently and ethically. The following are the most important categories, with guidance on their appropriate academic use (Bawden, 2021, p. 88).
Research Databases
For credible academic sources, use these platforms rather than general search engines:
- Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) — free access to academic articles across all disciplines
- JSTOR (jstor.org) — humanities and social science journals
- PubMed — medical and life sciences research
- African Journals Online (AJOL) — peer-reviewed African scholarship
- Your university library portal — check what databases your institution subscribes to
Reference Management
Use reference management software to organise your sources and generate citations automatically in APA, MLA, or any required format:
- Zotero — free, browser-integrated, excellent for students
- Mendeley — free, with a PDF reader and annotation tool
- RefWorks — institutional access often provided by universities
- Using these tools eliminates citation errors and saves significant time during essay writing
Writing and Productivity
Core digital writing tools every student should master:
- Microsoft Word / Google Docs — word processing; track changes for peer review; comments for feedback
- Grammarly — grammar and style checker; use as a learning tool, not a replacement for your own editing
- Microsoft Teams / Google Meet / Zoom — for online group meetings and presentations
- Google Drive / OneDrive — cloud storage and collaboration
Plagiarism Awareness
Understanding plagiarism in the digital age:
- Universities use tools like Turnitin and iThenticate to detect copied content — including paraphrasing that is too close to the original
- Copying from websites without citation is plagiarism, even if the website has no copyright notice
- Using AI-generated text and presenting it as your own work is an emerging form of academic dishonesty
- The correct use of any source requires proper citation; building on others’ ideas is scholarship — presenting their ideas as yours is fraud

Apply the digital literacy skills from this lecture to the following exercises. Record your findings and reflections in writing.
- 1Rate yourself from 1 (very weak) to 5 (very strong) on each of the six pillars of digital literacy. Write one specific action you will take this semester to improve your weakest pillar.
- 2Find a piece of information you recently received on WhatsApp or social media. Apply the SIFT method to it. What did you find? Was the information accurate, misleading, or false?
- 3Choose any dramatic photograph you have seen shared online recently. Perform a reverse image search on it. When was the image first published? Is it being used in its original context?
- 4Visit Dubawa.org or Africa Check and find one claim they have fact-checked that relates to Nigeria. Summarise: (a) what the original claim was, (b) what the fact-checkers found, and (c) how the misinformation spread.
- 5Classify each of the following as misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation, and justify your classification: (a) A friend forwards a message saying that onion soup cures COVID, which they genuinely believe. (b) A politician’s team creates and distributes a fabricated quote from their opponent. (c) A private message from a public official is leaked to the press to damage their reputation.
- 6Conduct a Google search on a topic related to your course. Compare the first three results from a general Google search with three results from Google Scholar on the same topic. What differences do you observe in credibility, methodology, and the quality of evidence?
- 7Review your social media privacy settings on one platform. What information is currently visible to the public? What changes, if any, will you make and why?
- 8Write a formal email to a fictitious lecturer requesting an extension on an assignment due to a documented health issue. Then write a WhatsApp message to a classmate about the same situation. Compare the tone, vocabulary, and structure. What makes each appropriate for its platform?

Digital literacy is not a luxury or a supplementary skill — it is a fundamental competency for participation in twenty-first-century academic, professional, and civic life. In Nigeria, where digital technology is rapidly reshaping every sector of society, the ability to navigate digital environments with intelligence, scepticism, safety, and ethical responsibility is as essential as the ability to read and write (Ojo & Dike, 2022, p. 72).
This lecture has introduced the six pillars of digital literacy, the categories of digital misinformation, six practical fact-checking strategies, the essentials of digital safety and ethics, and the key digital tools for academic work.
