Abstract

This article examines the prevailing scholarly consensus that severe criminal acts — including homicide, murder-suicide, and arson — resist monocausal explanation. Drawing on criminological, psychological, and sociological literature, it introduces the biopsychosocial framework as the standard analytical lens through which behavioural scientists interpret extreme violence. The article argues that meaningful understanding of criminal behaviour requires the simultaneous examination of biological vulnerabilities, psychological states, environmental stressors, and situational catalysts. The interaction of these four dimensions, not any single variable acting in isolation, produces the convergence that underlies extreme destructive acts. The article concludes by mapping these dimensions onto a unified explanatory model and outlining the scope of the series of which it forms the introduction.

Introduction

When a violent crime commands public attention, the impulse to assign a single, readily comprehensible cause is powerful and persistent. Commentators reach for poverty, mental illness, broken families, or moral failure as though any one of these were sufficient to explain an act of extreme destruction. Criminologists, psychologists, and sociologists are, however, in broad agreement that this framing is analytically inadequate. Severe crimes such as homicide, murder-suicide, and arson rarely, if ever, emerge from an isolated variable. They occur, as the consensus literature consistently documents, at the intersection of multiple converging forces (Widom, 2014; Farrington, 2003).

The persistence of monocausal reasoning in popular discourse is not merely an intellectual inconvenience. It shapes policy responses, distorts public empathy, and misallocates preventive resources. When poverty alone is blamed, the mentally unwell individual who lives in material comfort escapes scrutiny. When mental illness alone is blamed, the structural conditions that precipitate crisis remain unaddressed. The scientific consensus demands a more rigorous approach — one that accounts for the full complexity of human behaviour under extreme conditions.

This article, the first in a five-part series, introduces the biopsychosocial framework as the primary analytical tool for understanding why people commit serious crimes. Each article in the series examines one of the framework's four dimensions in depth: psychological and mental health factors, sociological and environmental pressures, neurobiological vulnerabilities, and situational triggers. Together, they constitute a comprehensive, evidence-based account of extreme violent behaviour.

The Biopsychosocial Framework: Origins and Application

The biopsychosocial model was first formalised in medicine by Engel (1977), who argued that disease could not be adequately explained by purely biological factors and required simultaneous attention to psychological and social dimensions. Behavioural scientists subsequently adapted this framework for the study of criminal behaviour, recognising that violent acts, like illness, emerge from the dynamic interaction of multiple systems operating at different levels of analysis (Raine, 2013).

In criminological application, the biopsychosocial model posits that no single domain — biological, psychological, or social — is sufficient to explain criminal conduct, but that each domain interacts with and amplifies the others. A neurological deficit that might be inconsequential in a stable, supportive environment may become criminogenic when combined with chronic social deprivation and an acute personal crisis. This interaction effect is central to the framework's explanatory power (Moffitt, 1993).

Contemporary forensic psychology and neuro-criminology have lent considerable empirical weight to the model. Brain imaging studies have identified structural and functional differences in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala of violent offenders (Raine et al., 2000). Longitudinal social studies have mapped the relationship between childhood adversity and adult criminality (Farrington, 2003). Psychiatric research has clarified the specific conditions under which mental illness elevates violence risk (Fazel & Grann, 2006). These bodies of evidence converge consistently on the biopsychosocial model as the most comprehensive available account.

The Problem with Monocausal Attribution

Monocausal attribution — the assignment of a complex phenomenon to a single explanatory variable — is not merely reductive; it is empirically contradicted by the available evidence. No biological vulnerability, however severe, has been shown to produce violent behaviour independently of environmental and psychological context (Caspi et al., 2002). No social stressor, however extreme, produces uniform criminal outcomes across all individuals exposed to it. The variance in outcome — the fact that most people who experience poverty, trauma, or mental illness do not commit severe crimes — is itself compelling evidence of multifactorial causation.

Merton's (1938) foundational work on strain theory demonstrated that structural conditions create differential pressure on individuals, but that the resulting behaviour is mediated by individual psychological responses and the availability of social resources. More recently, Caspi et al.'s (2002) landmark study of the MAOA gene and childhood maltreatment demonstrated that a genetic variant associated with aggression predicted antisocial behaviour only in individuals who had also experienced childhood abuse — a gene-environment interaction that exemplifies the biopsychosocial principle in its most precise empirical form.

Even substance abuse, which may appear to offer a direct causal pathway to violence, operates as a disinhibitor rather than a primary cause. Alcohol and drugs lower the threshold for the expression of pre-existing tendencies and amplify the impact of situational triggers, but they do not create violent inclinations from nothing (Bushman & Cooper, 1990). The individual who becomes violently intoxicated typically brings to that state a prior history of biological, psychological, and social vulnerability.

How Convergence Produces Extreme Violence

The most useful conceptual image for understanding how the biopsychosocial model functions is not a checklist but a convergence. Each dimension contributes a necessary but individually insufficient condition. Biological vulnerabilities — such as reduced prefrontal cortical activity or serotonin dysregulation — lower the general threshold for impulsive or aggressive behaviour. Psychological factors — such as untreated psychosis or deeply entrenched personality pathology — shape the form that aggression takes and the targets against which it is directed. Sociological stressors — such as chronic social marginalisation, domestic coercion, or the sudden collapse of a controlling relationship — create the motivational pressure that activates latent biological and psychological vulnerabilities. Situational triggers — an acute financial crisis, a substance, a perceived public humiliation — provide the final ignition.

This convergence model explains both the rarity of severe violent crime and its occurrence under specific conditions. Most individuals carry some vulnerability in one or two of these dimensions. Extreme violence tends to occur when vulnerabilities exist across multiple dimensions and are activated simultaneously. This pattern is consistent with the literature on homicide (Polk, 1994), on murder-suicide (Liem & Koenraadt, 2008), and on arson (Gannon & Pina, 2010). In each crime type, the research identifies not a single cause but a configuration of interacting factors.

The implication is significant. If extreme violence is produced by convergence, it can, in principle, be disrupted at any of the converging points. Effective clinical treatment of a mental health condition removes one factor. Structural support during an acute economic crisis removes another. Community intervention at the moment of relationship breakdown removes a third. Prevention, on this model, does not require addressing every dimension simultaneously — it requires reducing the probability of convergence by intervening at whichever dimension is most accessible at a given moment (Widom, 2014).

Understanding Cause Without Conceding Excuse

A persistent concern in public discourse around the scientific explanation of crime is that understanding causes implies diminishing moral responsibility. This concern is not trivial, and it deserves direct engagement. The biopsychosocial framework does not claim that individuals who commit severe crimes bear no responsibility for their actions. It claims, rather, that those actions are fully comprehensible — and therefore preventable — only when examined in their full causal complexity.

Moral philosophy has long distinguished between explanation and exculpation. To explain why something happened is not to approve of it or to absolve the agent of accountability. Courts routinely weigh both the culpability of an act and the mitigating factors that contextualise it. Forensic psychology provides the empirical basis for that weighing — not in order to excuse, but in order to adjudicate with the accuracy that justice requires (Melton et al., 2007).

The more pressing point, for the purposes of this series, is preventive. A society that attributes violence solely to moral failure has no scientific basis on which to intervene before violence occurs. A society that understands the biological, psychological, social, and situational precursors of extreme crime can design targeted interventions at each level — from neurological treatment programmes to trauma-informed community support to crisis de-escalation services. Causal understanding, in this light, is not a threat to accountability but its essential precondition.

Scope and Structure of This Series

The four articles that follow this introduction examine each dimension of the biopsychosocial framework in sustained depth. Article Two addresses the psychological and mental health factors that elevate the risk of severe violent behaviour, with particular attention to the distinction between conditions that are and are not overrepresented in violent crime populations. It examines the role of untreated psychosis and persecutory delusion in murder-suicide, the personality-disordered framework of those who commit predatory violence, and arson as an expression of profound psychological dysregulation.

Article Three examines sociological and environmental pressures, drawing on strain theory, the extensive literature on the escalation of domestic violence to lethality, and social learning research. Article Four explores neurobiological and physiological vulnerabilities, reviewing the neuro-criminological evidence on prefrontal cortical function, amygdala reactivity, and the neurochemical imbalances associated with aggression. Article Five analyses situational triggers — the immediate catalysts that ignite the conditions established by the earlier layers.

Each article is written to function independently as a research-based resource, while forming part of a coherent analytical whole. The series is intended for scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and informed general readers who seek a rigorous, evidence-based understanding of why severe crimes occur — and, by extension, how they might be prevented.

Conclusion

The scientific consensus on the causes of severe violent crime is clear: no single factor is sufficient. Homicide, murder-suicide, arson, and comparable acts of extreme destruction occur when biological vulnerabilities interact with psychological pathology, are activated by sociological stressors, and are ignited by an immediate situational trigger. The biopsychosocial framework provides the most comprehensive available model for mapping these interactions, and it is this framework that structures the inquiry developed across this series.

The stakes of this understanding are not merely academic. They concern how courts judge, how clinicians treat, how policymakers allocate resources, and how communities protect their most vulnerable members. To understand extreme violence is to accept the moral and intellectual responsibility to prevent it — and that responsibility begins with the discipline to think clearly about its causes.
